The Boston Licensing Board decides tomorrow whether to grant a full liquor license to Homestead Bakery and Cafe, 1448 Dorchester Ave.
Proposed manager Shiyu Wu told the board today he and his partners would run the long vacant space as a bakery between 6:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
Then, in the evenings, they would offer a series of "pop up" menus by a rotating series of chefs in different cuisines. At the same time, he said, Homestead would offer a similarly changing offering of performances and displays by local artists, poets and even stand-up comedians.
Last year, Homestead raised nearly $32,000 through a crowdsourcing effort towards bringing the cafe to life.
Because it's located in Dorchester, the cafe would be eligible for one of the city's "neighborhood" liquor licenses, rather than having to try to buy a regular liquor license on the open market, which could cost more than $300,000.
The mayor's office and representatives of City Councilors Frank Baker, Michael Flaherty, Michelle Wu and Ayanna Pressley supported the proposal, as did several Fields Corner residents who made the trek all the way downtown for the hearing.
